Money Transfers now Free with Zoompass!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Did you Zoom anyone cash today? Maybe paying your buddy back for last night’s dinner? If you did you’d have noticed something — you weren’t charged for the transaction.  That’s because Zoompass has removed fees for person-to-person money transfers when using the Zoompass Mobile Wallet.

I guess it was only a matter of time until these transactions became free. Have you ever asked a friend for a fee when they gave you a $20 bill to pay you back for something?   No.  With more and more people replacing their physical wallet for a virtual one, we want to keep your interactions with money as familiar and simple as it is now.

That also means increasing spending limits. Previously, you were only allowed to spend $250 a day — that’s jumped to $750. You can also spend $1000 a week or $2500 a month, up significantly from before.  That provides more flexibility in case you want to go on a trip to Europe or buy 500 Tim Horton’s coffees a day, if for some reason you wanted to do that.

The changes we’ve made not only make it easier for you to get what you need when you need it, but it’s an indication that Zoompass is getting stronger. We plan to roll out more Zoompass Mobile Wallet features soon and make that the whole experience that much better.

Here’s the bottom line, and no offence to the Queen: we expect that one day, in the not so distant future, you won’t need dollar bills. You won’t even carry a wallet, and how great will that be. No more torn pictures of your boyfriend, loose coins won’t be rolling on the floor, and beaten up birth certificates will be a thing of the past. Now that we’ve removed fees on person-to-person transactions and upped spending limits, we’re one step closer to a no-wallet world. Now, if only we could figure out how get makeup into a phone…

Zoompass: Helping students and families connect

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

It’s the middle of summer and the last thing you want to think about is school in September. But, if you’re heading out of town for university, it’s a good bet you’re already getting ready to leave home.

There’s a lot you can do in advance — buying books, new clothes – maybe a new phone or laptop. There are other things you can’t prepare for, like when you’re in a tight spot and need some quick cash from the ‘rents.

That’s where Zoompass comes in. While a lot of people use the service to transfer money between friends in the same city, but you should know that you can also send, receive, and request cash anywhere in the world.

Here’s a scenario you’ll most definitely encounter: It’s late. You’ve just got back from an evening on the town and you’re in desperate need of a pizza. But your pockets are empty and, unfortunately, your bank account is too. So you send a money request to your mom’s phone — hopefully you’re in a school on the other side of the world so you’re not waking her up — and ask if she can transfer $20 from her Zoompass account to yours. With a simple press of a button on almost any mobile phone, the money appears in your account and you’re in business. Use your pre-paid Zoompass MasterCard to pay for the eats.

You can also use the group money request to ask all your family members for money. This is useful when you and your siblings want to buy your parents an anniversary gift, but you’re all in different locations during the summer.

Let’s say you’re planning a surprise shindig, but have to pay the party bills before you all gather in one place. Send a group money request to your brother and sister and get them to transfer cash from their Zoompass account to yours. Then you can use your Zoompass card to pay the bill or transfer that money into your bank account, take it out and pay the caterer.

So, before you head to school in September, or embark on your summer vacation, make sure you set up a Zoompass account. It helps if you get your parents to set one up too! Your parents will love hearing from you. Trust me.

You, the World Cup and Zoompass

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Even if you’re not a soccer fan, you’ve probably watched a few games. And you likely took in those games at a pub, surrounded by rabid Brazil or Spanish fans, and before you knew it you were shouting at the top of your lungs, buying rounds for your friends and bragging about how your team would win the game.

And then you and your friends all ran out of money and had to go home before the second half. Ouch. We don’t mean to be insensitive, but that would have been a good time to use your Zoompass account.

First of all, Zoompass has a new feature called the Group Money Request where you can ask for cash from a few people at once. So, instead of having to leave, or find an ATM and miss a goal (OK, you probably won’t miss a goal), you can ask your buddies to Zoom you money from their accounts so you can buy the next round.

If you’re lucky enough to be in South Africa, you’re probably lugging around a wallet, paying for tickets, t-shirts, food and late-night cabs. It would be better if you didn’t have to carry cash and who knows, in four years, when the World Cup is in Rio de Janeiro, you may be able to use Zoompass everywhere you go. That means you’d be able to buy tickets using the Zoompass app or pre-paid MasterCard, purchase souvenirs by sending money to retailers over your phone and pay your airfare, hotel bill and taxis all with the press of a button.

But let’s get back to today. Zoompass isn’t just about paying for things, and there’s more to the World Cup than spending money to have fun. If you’ve checked out Twitter lately, you know these soccer matches have got a lot of people worked up. There are so many World Cup-related Tweets that the site has had some problems functioning properly. Clearly, social media plays a huge role in how people watch these games. You may not have realized this, but Zoompass has a social function — whenever you send money you can send messages too. So, tell your friend how much you hate it when he’s right about who will win, or let her know where to find you in the pub, but only after she buys the nachos.

The World Cup is a lot of fun to watch, even if you’re not a huge footie fan, but it’s better when you can pay for things without cash. If you really want to pull out a wad of bills in a packed pub full of excitable soccer fans, expect to buy everyone a beer.

Zoompass wins award for “Best Mobile Application”

Friday, June 25th, 2010

None of the people working on Zoompass are here to win awards, but you can’t help but feel all warm and fuzzy inside when you’re recognized for good work. So, with that in mind, we want to let everyone know that Zoompass just won a Canadian Innovation Award from Advanced Card Technologies (ACT) Canada.

ACT Canada is an organization that’s all about secure payment and secure identity management. Their members include companies in the financial, government, transit and retail spaces, among other groups. So, what we’re saying is that we’re really pleased to be recognized for our achievements by them.

We won the award for Best Mobile Application for the Zoompass Mobile Wallet, which is available for download to most top phones including BlackBerrys, iPhones and Android phones. While we’re pleased to win the award, what we’re really excited about is that it was recognized from an organization that values safety and security.

One of the reasons the judges liked Zoompass is because of our leading edge encryption technologies. You need a PIN to send money, your information is stored on secure servers — never on the phone itself. That means that if you lose your phone, you’re not losing your money— and transactions are backed by MasterCard’s zero liability guarantee.

They also liked the fact that you can quickly send money to friends using our easy-to-navigate app, so not only is it safe, but it’s speedy and convenient. Oh, and it’s cheap to use. Setting up an account costs nothing. Adding money costs nothing. Requesting and receiving Zoompass money transfers is also free. There’s a small charge when you send money to another user or transfer money from your Zoompass account to your bank account, but other than that you don’t pay a cent. They liked all of that.

So, as you can tell we’re happy to have won, but now it’s time to get back to work. Wait until you see what we’ve got planned to win next years’ awards!
